Two benefits of plant shedding:

First of all, it can prevent the plants from damage. He takes the maple trees as an example. The leaves fall down during winter to prevent from being damaged by heavy ice and snow.

Secondly, shedding can conserve nutrients for the trees. A good example of this is a kind of tree called avocado. It bears many fruits and needs considerable nutrition. By shedding parts of its fruits, the plant can make sure that there are enough nutrients for the remaining fruits.
